By now, you’ve read, been told, or have witnessed the phenomenon in person, this notion that marketing is now a two-way communication.

Most people I talk about this with acknowledge this too. And they agree. And they say so publicly. And many even write about it.

But still most people don’t practice marketing that way.

It was an interesting experience when we asked people to make contributions to our CircleNomics book. We were surprised by how many would not. Ultimately we realized most people simply aren’t conducting themselves in that way, even though most say they do.

So let me say it again: marketing is no longer about shouting one-way out of a bullhorn. Marketing is a conversation – an interactive, engaged conversation.

Make 2010 the year you make the decision to start marketing this way. It is about building relationships first. It is about caring about people. It is about helping people without necessarily expecting anything in return. It is about sharing information with your community, only because you sincerely want to help people. It is about serving first, and selling last.

A lot of us have been on the edge for some time. It is time to jump. Time to jump off the edge, and into a world that may sometimes seem scary and unknown, but once you’re in? The water is wonderful.
